Cassandra
Monodrama by Christa Wolf - Opera by Michael Jarrell

Cassandra's Monologue begins after Troy is already conquered and destroyed. The prophetess, as
prisoner of war and trophy captured by the Greeks, is waiting for her execution by Agamemnon's wife.

By placing the mytholgical figure Cassandra "in her (original) social and historical situation", the author Christa Wolf fulfills a process of her own: "She 'sees' the future, because she has the courage to recognise the reality in the present." [Christa Wolf]

In the short time remaining, Cassandra reviews her destiny and the fate of Troy.

"The last thing in my life will be a picture, not a word. Words die before pictures."
"I want to continue to witness even if there is no longer one single human being left to demand my
 testimony..."
 [Cassandra]

With "Cassandra" the East German authoress became internationally famous. The book was printed
in large numbers and quickly translated into many languages. For Christa Wolf, the Trojan War was
the symbol for all evil deriving from male domination in the world.

The opera begins after Troy is already conquered and destroyed. The prophetess, as a prisoner of war and trophy captured by the Greeks, is waiting for her execution. In the short time remaining, Cassandra looks back over events in her life and the fate of Troy, her home. She remains a witness, even if there is not a single person left, wanting to hear her testimony. [Read more]
